Escher X nendo

A House for Escher

NGV International
Saturday 1 MarchMonday 9 June

Oki Sato – founder and principal designer of the Japanese design studio nendo – conceived House for Escher for NGV’s 2018 exhibition Escher X nendo | Between Two Worlds. This exhibition presented the iconic works of Dutch artist M.C. Escher in dialogue with nendo’s designs, creating a compelling interplay between the two creatives.

At the heart of nendo’s design for the exhibition was a minimalist house motif, representing space, scale and perspective – ideas that resonate deeply in both Sato and Escher’s works. Much like Escher’s use of familiar imagery to convey complex ideas, Sato utilised the simple form of a house as the foundational module for his design. This approach brings the unique graphic intricacies of Escher into dialogue with the inventive, design-forward thinking of nendo.

Now on display at NGVI, nendo’s House for Escher collection and House of Movement, with Escher’s iconic Day and Night, commemorate nendo’s response to Escher’s art and form a memorable collaboration.
